Modern bio-protein in dog food: is it safe?

New protein sources in dog food raise questions. We explain what the EntoPro™ bio-protein is, how it is made and whether it is safe for your dog.

Unusual protein sources that hardly anyone had heard of a few years ago are appearing more and more often in dog food ingredient lists. Naturally, this raises questions: where do they come from, how are they controlled and are they really safe for your dog?

Where new protein sources come from

Traditional dog foods rely on protein from common types of meat. More and more often, though, modern and more sustainable protein sources are appearing, developed with nutritional value and a smaller environmental footprint in mind. They naturally raise questions about safety among dog owners, which is a completely understandable reaction to something new.

What is EntoPro™?

EntoPro™ is our proprietary bio-protein. It has an amino acid profile comparable to beef and a digestibility above 85%, and it provides a chitin prebiotic, which means it supports your dog’s gut flora. This is one of the reasons why our recipes, which contain 30% EntoPro™, fit the philosophy of a healthy gut as the foundation of a dog’s immunity and health. You can read more about how our proprietary bio-protein works on the How it works page.

How EntoPro™ is made

EntoPro™ is made in a patented biological process that we call environmental biofortification. It starts with mushroom substrates, which naturally concentrate nutrients from agricultural by-products. These nutrient-rich substrates then go to bioadapted insect lines, developed over more than 70 generations.

In short: the EntoPro™ bio-protein is made from insects fed on mushroom mycelium, with no artificial additives at the production stage. The result is a protein ingredient of high nutritional and functional quality.

Is EntoPro™ safe for dogs?

Yes. EntoPro™ has been authorised in the European Union as an animal feed ingredient since 2021, under Regulation 2021/1372. It is made in a closed-loop, HACCP-certified facility, and every batch goes through quality control, from the raw materials to the finished product. It is also a protein most dogs have never come across before, which can be an advantage for dogs with the food sensitivities described in our guide to the elimination diet. As always, introduce new food gradually and watch your dog.

Which dogs it suits

Modern bio-protein works well as part of an everyday, well-balanced diet. If you are just starting to think about choosing a food and wondering what to look at beyond the protein source, take a look at our guide to choosing dog food. At Veli, EntoPro™ is in every one of our six recipes, supporting the gut and rounding out the amino acid profile whichever flavour you choose, from Lamb to Venison.

Are new protein sources in dog food safe for my dog?

Yes, as long as they come from a proven, controlled process and are easy to digest. It is worth choosing manufacturers that clearly explain where their protein comes from.

What is EntoPro™?

It is Veli's proprietary bio-protein, which provides a complete amino acid profile and has a prebiotic effect thanks to chitin, supporting your dog's gut.

Can this kind of protein cause allergies?

It is a protein most dogs have never come across before, so it can be a good choice for dogs with sensitivities. Like any protein, though, it is not completely free of allergy risk, so introduce any new food gradually and watch how your dog reacts.
