A dog licks its lips beside an empty bowl while a cat sitting higher up on a cabinet watches it disapprovingly

If a dog and a cat live under one roof, sooner or later you will see a scene many owners know well: the dog eagerly empties the cat’s bowl before anyone has time to react. Is it a problem or just a bit of mischief? The answer is fairly simple.

Why cat food tempts dogs

Cat food usually has a stronger aroma and is richer in protein and fat, which is why many dogs love it. But the fact that your dog adores it does not mean it is good for them in the long run.

How cat food is different

Cats are obligate carnivores and have different nutritional needs from dogs. Their food contains more protein and fat, plus additives such as taurine, in amounts suited to a cat’s body, not a dog’s. For a dog, this food is simply too rich and not balanced for them.

Is it harmful?

Eating from the cat’s bowl once is usually not dangerous for a dog. The problem starts when your dog eats cat food regularly. Too much fat and protein can lead to weight gain, which we describe in more detail in our guide to overweight dogs, and to an upset stomach. Be especially careful if your dog has a sensitive digestive system or has had pancreatitis, because fatty food can then harm them more quickly. If your dog vomits or has diarrhoea for more than a day after raiding the cat’s food, contact your vet.

What to do if your dog steals the cat’s food

This way each pet eats its own portion without competing for the bowl.

Dog food, not cat food

Cat food is not food for dogs, even if your dog has a different opinion on the matter. Day to day, your dog should get a well-balanced dog food suited to their age and needs, as we explain in our guide to choosing dog food.

All Veli recipes are complete wet food for adult dogs, balanced according to the FEDIAF 2024 standards. If you want your dog’s bowl to hold something as tempting as the cat’s, build your bundle to suit your dog’s needs.

Is it harmful if my dog eats cat food once?

Usually not. A single portion rarely causes more than a passing upset stomach. However, if vomiting or diarrhoea lasts longer than a day, contact your vet. The real problem is eating cat food regularly.

Why do dogs like cat food?

Because it has a stronger aroma and is richer in protein and fat, which many dogs find very tempting.

Can a cat eat dog food?

Not in the long run. Dog food does not cover a cat's needs, including its need for taurine, so it can harm a cat more than cat food harms a dog.
